Industrial deafness also known as occupational deafness or noise induced hearing loss, are terms used to describe the deterioration of a person's hearing as a result of his or her working environment.

There are many different degrees of noise induced hearing loss which affect people in many different ways, ranging from mild deafness which may only affect someone in social situations such as watching TV or talking in a crowd; to severe deafness where a sufferer will rely on lip reading or sign language.

If you have worked in a noisy environment and have noted that you are having difficulties in hearing as well as you used to (often people realise when they have the television switched on louder than other people find comfortable) you may be suffering from industrial deafness.

A lot of people in our area of the North West UK work in call centres and wear headphones which may be too loud. Other local people worked in very noisy cotton mills many years ago. If you stopped working many years ago but have only fairly recently (in the last few years) noticed your hearing deteriorating you may still have a valid claim for compensation for noise induced hearing loss.

Tinnitus

In addition to deafness people who have been exposed to excessive noise at work may also suffer from Tinnitus. This is a medical term for any noise that people hear in one ear, in both ears or in their head. People often describe these noises as a ringing in the ears, whistling, hissing or buzzing and again the degree of symptoms can vary considerably.

How to Claim Compensation for Industrial Deafness or Tinnitus

If you feel that you may have a claim for industrial deafness or Tinnitus compensation you should seek both medical and legal advice at the earliest opportunity. You may be referred for a hearing test or "audiogram", and that can usually determine whether or not you are suffering from hearing loss which has been caused by excessive noise.

Our Personal Injury Solicitors would then consider whether or not you were provided with adequate hearing protection, or if your employer failed in some respect in their duty of care to provide you with a safe place of work and a safe working environment.

It is important to note that there are strict time limits for making an industrial deafness or Tinnitus compensation claim. It is necessary to start the claim within 3 years of the date when you knew you had a significant hearing problem as a result of noise at work.

Unlike many other Solicitors we do not pretend that these claims are easy or straight forward. They are not. We would, however, provide you with a free consultation to decide whether or not we could offer you a complete No Win No Fee arrangement to pursue your industrial deafness claim.

Please note that you may be able to obtain Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit if you are diagnosed with industrial deafness.
