Finding out you have ovarian cancer is life changing, but being misdiagnosed or given a late diagnosis can be devastating. Ovarian cancer is the 15th most common cancer in the UK, and while it only accounts for 2% of all new cancer cases, discovering that medical negligence has contributed to misdiagnosis or a delayed diagnosis can mean you might have endure more invasive, intensive treatment; or, in some cases, it may result in a terminal prognosis.

Sometimes, symptoms of ovarian cancer do not become apparent until a later stage. This means it is vital that your doctor picks up any signs as quickly as possible and sends you for appropriate tests and scans, or refers you to a specialist in a timely manner.

How do I know if I have a late or misdiagnosed ovarian cancer claim?

A compensation claim can only be brought if there has been a breach of the duty of care by medical professionals, which has resulted in harm or loss to you. It may be possible to claim compensation if:

  • Your ovarian cancer was misdiagnosed
  • Your ovarian cancer was diagnosed late due to medical negligence, and resulted in more aggressive or invasive treatment being required
  • Correct tests were not carried out
  • Scans or biopsy were not given or misread
  • Blood tests were not taken or misread

It is usually not possible to claim compensation if a late diagnosis would not have changed the end result.

Ovarian Cancer statistics

Ovarian cancer usually affects women who have been through the menopause, however, it can affect young women too, so anyone with concerns should visit their GP. During 2014, the latest figures available from Cancer Research UK, 7,378 new cases of ovarian cancer were diagnosed. This type of cancer currently only has a 35% (2010-11) survival rate for 10 years or more. At the time of writing, the exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown, but symptoms can include:

  • A swollen stomach
  • Needing to urinate more often
  • Constantly feeling bloated
  • Feeling full quickly when eating
  • Discomfort in your stomach or pelvic area

The UK has the seventh highest incidence rate of ovarian cancer in Europe (2012), with Latvia having the highest rate. Here are some more ovarian cancer statistics:

  • 55-58% of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at a late stage (2010-2014)
  • Unlike cervical cancer, ovarian cancer is not associated with deprivation in England
  • The peak age for ovarian cancer is 75-79 years old
  • The North East has the highest cancer rate in the UK at 649 per 100,000 people. Closely followed by the North East with 633 per 100,000 people (2015)
  • An estimated 21% of ovarian cancers are linked to lifestyle factors such as smoking, hormone replacement therapy and certain occupational exposure
