The education team at Forbes offers a full range of training sessions on a wide variety of legal topics to educational establishments and local education authorities. Forbes is fully accredited by the SRA to provide CPD points for these sessions and all are delivered by experienced solicitors. Below is a selection of seminars that we regularly deliver to clients; we are keen to tailor these wherever possible to the specific needs of the organisation.

Appeals Handling

This session is aimed at those delegates involved in dealing with appeals against disciplinary/grievance matters. Keenly focussed on the problems that arise in an education context, it provides an overview of the importance of the appeal process, looking at relevant case law and providing genuine "hands on" tips.

Appraisals and Pay Appeals

This is a session designed to set out the key requirements for appraising the performance of both teachers employed at an educational establishment. In particular, reference is made to the assessment and reporting requirements to be followed to ensure delegates are aware of their duties when conducting an appraisal. New regulations relating to pay progression, performance related pay and their implications are also considered; and a practical approach is adopted to give delegates the confidence necessary to deal with these issues.

Conduct and Capability

This is an interactive session designed for any School Leadership Teams dealing with staffing issues; and can be pitched at different levels depending on the requirements of the individual establishment. It is heavily interactive and involves a role playing session in order to illustrate the potential pitfalls and problems that can be encountered on a daily basis in dealing with conduct and capability matters.

Contracting with Third Parties

This session deals with the issues and pitfalls which businesses (whether run for profit or otherwise) need to be aware of when entering into contracts with third parties. It will provide delegates with an overview of when and how a contract is formed, when it may be beneficial to have one in writing and negotiation tactics. The session also covers the different types of clauses that may be included within a third party contract, drawing upon case studies from within the education sector.

DBS Checks and Disqualification by Association

The session will cover the importance of obtaining such disclosure; the different types of disclosure - including guidance on how those apply to different employees; commentary about the Children's Barred List and the legal obligations and requirements upon the employer in an education setting. Disqualification (including those disqualified by association) is a must for those involved in Early and Later Years provision. The session will include reference to the most recent guidance available and will provide an overview of the legal requirements and practical ways to protect those responsible for employing and or dismissing employees in educational settings.

Equality and Diversity

This is a session designed to highlight the impact of the Equality Act 2010 on the workplace and to explain the various legislative provisions; with reference to most recent case law in order to give delegates a full flavour of the need to be aware of equality and diversity issues in the workplace. The session draws on real life examples from our experience of advising educational establishments in order to provide highly specific, relevant training.

General Updates

This is a general update session that can be run on a six monthly or yearly basis in order to provide those dealing School Leadership Teams with a general update of the most important developments in education law, with a particular emphasis on Employment, Safeguarding and Admission Appeals dependent on the needs of the organisation.

Mock Tribunal

The team produce 4 sessions on this; covering a wide ambit of employment rights. This session is aimed to provide delegates with an insight into the Tribunal forum and aims to be as realistic as possible. It encourages delegates to be involved in the decision making process in order to highlight the potential issues that regularly arise in the Employment Tribunal.

Redundancy and Reorganisation

This interactive session explains the legal framework surrounding redundancy and reorganisation; providing School Leadership Teams, Business Managers and Governors with a practical toolkit and confidence in planning the needs of Education establishments in an ever more demanding environment.

Social Media and Safeguarding

This increasingly popular course reviews the law around the use of social media, incorporating current government guidance to provide educational establishments with confidence in dealing with this increasingly common and difficult area. The course draws on the team's practical experience in advising educational establishments to provide delegates with best practice and practical advice on handling these issues within Schools, Colleges or other educational establishments.
