In this unprecedented time, many of us have turned our focus to personal affairs. As well as having a valid Will in place, it is beneficial to have Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in place.

Many people focus on their Will, however equal weight (if not more) should be given to Lasting Powers of Attorney as they govern what happens to you during your lifetime. LPAs allow you to appoint people to act on your behalf if you are unable to make decisions for yourself, or as you get older it allows you to delegate tasks for your attorneys to deal with and manage.

There are two types of LPAs: Health and Welfare & Property and Finance. The two are similar but can be used at different times. The Health and Welfare LPA can only be used if you cannot make a decision yourself, whereas the Property and Finance LPA can be used even if you do have capacity and you choose to pass some matters to your attorneys to deal with to help you out.

Social distancing rules mean face to face meetings are not possible for the time being, but we are currently making active use of video conferencing, telephone calls, emails and letters. There are strict requirements in place for signing LPAs, which with social distancing can be challenging. Guidance on how to sign effectively can be given during your initial discussion.

Once the current social distancing requirements are lifted we will be happy to meet with you, at no additional cost to oversee the signature formalities again, in person, to give you peace of mind that your affairs are all in order.

Our dedicated Wills team are offering initial consultations by telephone, skype and Facetime to assist with Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. If you would like to call a member of the team to discuss in detail please contact Megan Diamond on 01772 220 204. Alternatively send any question through to Forbes Solicitors via our online Contact Form.
