Forbes Solicitors is warning that a decision reached today in the Supreme Court regarding equal pay could have wide reaching implications for local employers, particularly those in the public sector.
The Supreme Court ruled that employees can bring a claim for equal pay in the High Court as opposed to the Employment Tribunal, which will extend the time limit in which to lodge a claim from 6 months to 6 years.
Jonathan Holden, Employment Solicitor, comments, "This could potentially lead to a flood of litigation from those employees out of time for issuing a claim in the Tribunal; but still well within the much more generous 6 year limitation period that applies in the 'ordinary' Civil Courts. Employers need to be aware of the implications."
