Since the Conservatives announced their plans to extend the Right to Buy, the policy has gained much criticism as it is likely to see housing associations selling more of its asset base under the statutory right to buy.
The House of Lords has recently voted to make an amendment to the Charities Bill so charities are not "compelled to use or dispose of their assets in a way which is inconsistent with their charitable purposes". Although the change does not specifically refer to registered providers, many RPs do have charitable status.
The Bill will still need to be approved by the House of Commons before it can pass into law. Parliament is now in recess until 7 September 2015 and therefore it will be some time before the decision on the amendment will be made.
