Article

02 September, 2015

In March 2015, the government implemented its controversial plans to increase civil court fees. Four months on and the government has launched a "Consultation on Further Fees Proposals". Government minister, Shailesh Vara commented that despite the fees already introduced, the court system cost £1billion more a year to run than it received in income.

The proposals are as follows:

  • To increase the fee in an uncontested application from £50 to £100.
  • To increase the fee for a contested an application from £155 to £255.
  • An increase in the maximum fee for money claims from £10,000 to at least £20,000.
  • A general uplift of 10% to a wide range of fees in civil proceedings.

Personal injury and clinical negligence claims will be excluded from the higher cap.

The Consultation is due to close on 15th September 2015, we will keep you posted as the matter progresses. Further information is available here.
