For some reason every January and February, Family Law Solicitors find that the amount of new clients making appointments increases dramatically!
There are several opinions as to why this may be the case.
Some of the suggestions are as follows:
i) Spending a lot of time together as a family
ii) The office Christmas party
iii) Copious amounts of alcohol
iv) The amount of money spent!
v) New Years resolutions!!!
Whatever the reasons, the amount of new divorces soar in the New Year. It would be a good idea therefore to be organised before attending the Solicitors office. Make a list of any questions you have, in relation to the process, length of time and cost. If there are children, then this will be a major worry and your concerns can be discussed with your Solicitor.
Making a list of your finances and collating documents, such as pay slips, bank statements, P60's or benefit statements will speed things along. Also, obtaining up to date mortgage statements/house valuations and documents relating to savings or liabilities will also assist.
Your Solicitor will be able to assess you to see if you are eligible for public funding, and if not, will be able to give you an estimate of how much the divorce proceedings will be.
Happy New Year? Hmmmm , possibly!
