Workplace Pregnancy Discrimination

01 September, 2016

The Women and Equalities Committee has published a report espousing legal recommendations to address the documented surge in workplace pregnancy discrimination over the past 10 years.

The proposals include:-

  • Increased protection from redundancy for new and expectant mothers whereby they could only be made redundant in very specific circumstances;
  • Extension of the time limit for bringing a claim for pregnancy / maternity related Tribunal claims from 3 months to 6 months;
  • Reduction in Tribunal fees for pregnancy discrimination cases;
  • Extension of maternity-related rights to casual, agency and zero-hours workers

Is this a matter that employment law can adequately address, or is it rather underlying workplace practices and attitudes that need to change? For advice and assistance please contact a member of the Forbes Employment Team on 01772 220 022.
