The HSE have announced a programme of unannounced inspections to review health and safety standards in the waste and recycling sector.

The HSE has highlighted the waste and recycling industry as a high risk priority sector. In the last five years there have been 39 fatalities to workers and 11 members of the public have been killed as a result of work activity in the sector.

Furthermore, the HSE contend that the waste and recycling industry has a statistically higher rate of workplace injury and work-related ill health than other sectors and workers in this industry are more likely to suffer work-related illness than any other sector.

The on the spot inspections are to ensure that organisations are taking reasonable steps to protect workers and members of the public against risk and injury. The HSE have reiterated that they will not hesitate to use enforcement to bring about improvements.
