HSE releases Annual Injury and Ill Health Statistics

Annual statistics released by the HSE have revealed that in 2017/18, 1.4 million workers suffered from work-related ill health and around 555,000 from non-fatal injuries.

According to key figures in 2017/18 there were:

• 144 fatal injuries at work
• 1.4 million working people suffering from a work-related illness
• 30.7 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury

In addition, 493 cases were prosecuted and resulted in a conviction with the fines from the convictions totalling £72.6 million. This is an increase in previous years and a direct result of the Health and Safety Offences, Corporate Manslaughter and Food Safety and Hygiene Offences Definitive Guidelines which allows fines to be imposed in line with turnover.

Workplace injury and new cases of ill health cost Britain £15.0 billion a year with 30.7 million working days lost.

Although the figures remain high, Britain continues to be one of the safest places to work. Construction was once again highlighted as one of the higher risk sectors. Construction remains a major priority for the HSE; in a recent sector plan they announced their attention to improve the health and safety record of this area over the forthcoming year.
