Fall in hospital results in compensation

Article

22 July, 2009

An 87 year old lady had been staying in a cluttered room in the rehabilitation ward of a hospital.

In July 2005 whilst the nurses were trying to mobilise her, her walker became stuck, so the nurses directed her to walk backwards. She then fell over fracturing her left leg. A previous fall had resulted in a fracture to the same leg and this fall caused a second fracture.

As a result of this second fall she suffered permanent disability to her left leg.

She brought a claim against the hospital and was awarded £50,000, even though the hospital tried to allege that she would have suffered from the same disability as a result of the first fall.
