What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an asbestos related disease and a form of cancer that affects the pleural lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma can also affect the lining of the abdomen as well as the heart.

There are two main types of mesothelioma known as Pleural Mesothelioma and Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Plueral mesothelioma affects the lungs and is usually triggered when an individual inhales asbestos fibres. Eventually a tumour develops on the pleura or lining of the lungs which makes breathing very difficult and often very painful. Pleural mesothelioma compensation claims are the most common type of mesothelioma claims that our expert solicitors handle.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a less common form of mesothelioma but just as damaging. Individuals diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma suffer from a tumour that develops on the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum). This tumour then prevents the lining from lubricating organs inside the abdomen.

Who is at risk of Mesothelioma?

Forbes Solicitors have fought and won compensation for many clients from varied employment backgrounds. A vast majority of claims have been on behalf of male victims as shipyards, workshops and building sites predominantly employed male workers. An increasing amount of claims are now being seen on behalf of female victims exposed to asbestos through contact with work clothes and overalls of their male relatives as well as those who have worked or lived near and in factories laced with asbestos.

Forbes have dealt with many asbestos compensation claims and have identified the following workers most at risk of developing mesothelioma:

  • Boilermakers
  • Welders
  • Laggers
  • Pipe fitters
  • Plumbers
  • Joiners
  • Carpenters
  • Builders
  • Mechanics
  • Electricians

This is just a short selection of the most at risk workers and is by no means a comprehensive list. Our expert solicitors have helped many people from a variety of employment backgrounds.
