SOLVING PERSONAL LEGAL MATTERS
Your eyes are the window to the world and deserve the best care. They're how we learn 80% of our knowledge through the first 12 years of childhood, and they continue to help us throughout life. But what if that is taken away from you? There are around 6 million people living in the UK with sight-threatening eye conditions, but the RNIB states that half of these cases are avoidable.
We have reimagined famous works of art and some of the most beautiful views in the world to highlight the impact of eye conditions and the effect they can have on vision. Our eye condition simulator will help you to understand the plight of those who suffer from eye conditions and explain the causes.
Floaters, appearing as squiggly lines or cobweb-like shapes can occur without reason as a result of aging, but that is not always the case.
Floaters can also be caused by a process called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) -where the gel inside your eye separates from the retina. Floaters can also by a symptom of retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is when a paper-thin layer of tissue (the retina) that is key in the function of visual recognition starts to pull away from the back of the eye, leading to blindness if not treated quickly.
Dark spots are a symptom of diabetic retinopathy - a complication of diabetes, caused by blood sugar levels damaging the retina. It can cause blindness if left untreated.
There are three ways in which high blood sugar levels can damage retinal blood vessels:
Background retinopathy - tiny bulges develop in the blood cells, which may bleed slightly but do not usually affect your vision
Pre-proliferative retinopathy - more severe and widespread changes affecting the blood vessels, including significant bleeding into the eye.
Proliferative retinopathy - scar tissue and new blood vessels, which are weak and bleed easily, develop in the retina; resulting in loss of vision.
Dark spots can be treated with either laser treatment and injections of medication into your eyes, or in more severe cases an operation to remove blood or scar tissue from your eyes.
One of the main causes of cloudy vision is cataracts. Cataracts occur when the small transparent discs inside your eyes develop cloudy patches. Over time these patches become bigger causing blurry, misty vision and eventually blindness.
Surgery is usually offered on the NHS if your cataracts are affecting your eyesight and quality of life. The surgery, usually done under general anaesthetic, replacing the damaged misty lens with a clear plastic one.
Blurred vision is one of the most common types of eye conditions, with 74% of people in the UK wearing corrective eyewear or having had laser eye surgery to help them see better. *However, blurred vision can be the signs of much more serious conditions such as:
A macular hole- a gap that opens at the centre of the retina. In the early stages, macular holes can cause blurred and distorted vision. Straight lines can look wavy or bowed and you may struggle to read small print. Surgery is normally needed to repair the hole. This can be caused by a retinal detachment, eye injury, being very long or short-sighted or a persistent swelling of the central retina.
Glaucoma - an eye condition where the optic nerve becomes damaged. It tends to develop slowly over many years and affects your peripheral vision first. There are several types of glaucoma including acute angle closure glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, and childhood glaucoma. Most cases are caused by a build-up of pressure in the eye when fluid is unable to drain properly and is often treated by using eyedrops, having laser surgery or draining the fluid from the eye.

As cataracts become more advanced, they begin to darken and vision can begin to darken with a yellow or brown tinge. Surgery is usually offered on the NHS and the misty lens is replaced with a clear plastic lens.
Discolouration can also be a symptom of diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and multiple sclerosis.
Although the deterioration of sight is a natural symptom of aging, certain eye conditions can develop prematurely. Issues with eye health can be the result of incomprehensive aftercare, vital warning signs being missed in regular health checks or medical negligence during surgery.
Injury to the eye as a result of clinical negligence can be devastating and have a severe impact on a person's life.
