Ed Sheeran, guest star on Radio 2’s Scott Mills Breakfast show this morning, has revealed that he has written into his Will plans for a posthumous album titled “Eject”. The album will feature a curated selection of songs spanning his career, chosen by his wife after his death. Sheeran explained that he wants the release to be intentional and meaningful, not a rushed compilation of unreleased tracks thrown together after he’s gone. He mentioned friends he has recently lost who died without having made a Will, and the “mess” this leaves for the families left behind.

Whilst this may feel morbid, Ed explained that he just wanted everything to be written down in “black and white”. Beyond the music industry, his announcement offers a powerful reminder for all of us: planning for death isn’t morbid - it’s responsible, loving, and deeply personal.

Why Planning Matters

As a solicitor specialising in Wills and estate planning, I often see how transformative it can be when someone takes the time to plan for what happens after they die. Whether you're a global music icon or a grandparent in Lancashire, the principles are the same:

  • Clarity: A well-drafted Will ensures your wishes are clearly understood and legally enforceable.

  • Control: You decide who inherits your assets, who looks after your children, and, like Ed Sheeran, how your legacy is preserved.

  • Care for loved ones: Thoughtful planning can reduce stress, confusion, and conflict among family members during an already difficult time.

  • Creative legacy: Just as Sheeran is curating his musical legacy, you can leave behind letters, gifts, or charitable donations that reflect your values and passions.

It’s Not Just About Money

Ed Sheeran’s story highlights that Wills aren’t just about finances. They’re about legacy. Whether it’s a song, a story, or a special item passed down through generations, your Will can be a final message to the people you love.

Start the Conversation

Death is never easy to talk about, but it’s a conversation worth having. If Ed Sheeran can do it publicly, we can do it privately - with our own families, and with trusted professionals.

If you haven’t yet made a Will, or if it’s been years since you reviewed yours, consider following Ed’s example.
