How to apply for a skilled worker visa
The UK Skilled Worker visa, now the main route for overseas professionals, offers a path to permanent residency after five years. With eligibility tied to a licensed employer, salary thresholds, and English proficiency, the route has become crucial in addressing labour shortages—especially in sectors like healthcare and science where lower salary thresholds apply.

The skilled work visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa which permits a worker to stay in the UK to do an eligible job with an improved employer. the applicant’s partner and children can apply to join or stay in the UK as ‘dependants’ if they’re eligible. This visa can last up to 5 years before you are required to extend. This route is considered desirable as after 5 years, you can apply to settle permanently in the UK.
Firstly, in order to be considered eligible for the visa, you must be working for a UK employer that has been approved by the Home Office and be paid at least the minimum salary rate for the job role.
At present, this will be the highest of either £38,700 or the “going rate” for the job role. It must also be noted that there is a requirement to prove that you can read, write, speak and understand English and you must obtain a minimum level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Whilst £38,700 is the standard salary, an applicant can qualify for a lower, discounted threshold of £30,960 which applies for roles listed on the Immigration Salary List or in the event that the applicant is a new entrant to the labour market. As of 2025, the Immigration Salary list includes (but is not limited to):
Care workers and home carers – lower rate of £25,000 (£12.82 per hour)
Construction and building trades not elsewhere classified (only retrofitters) – £25,500 (£13.08 per hour)
Biological scientists – lower rate of £28,100 (£14.41 per hour)
Chemical scientists (only jobs in the nuclear industry) lower rate of £29,600 (£15.18 per hour)
Arts officers, producers and directors – lower rate of £31,300 (£16.05 per hour)
Applications can be made up to three months prior to the start date of the job role in the UK. To apply, the applicant will need to:
1. Obtain a job offer;
2. Obtain the Certificate of Sponsorship;
3. Submit an online application (with supporting documentation) within 3 months of being assigned their Certificate of Sponsorship;
4. Attend an appointment at a visa application centre to process biometric information;
5. Pay the applicable fee; and
6. Await decision from Home office.
Requirements for Employers?
Whilst there are requirements of the applicant, it is vital that employers provide evidence that it is a legitimate organisation which operates legally in the UK. Further, the sponsor must hold a valid sponsorship licence with an A rating and they must have paid the Immigration Skills Charge.
It is imperative that the Employer/Sponsor keeps detailed and up-to-date records which includes the employment contract, copies of the worker’s ID and/or biometric information and evidence of recruitment efforts (if required). Employers should seek legal advice where necessary as compliance with immigration laws and cooperation with the Home Office is imperative.
