It is vital to remember that HSE do, rightly, police such risks, but also that an inspector visiting to assess flour dust exposure management can, and likely will, highlight any other issues that come to light.

For instance, we have seen inspectors visiting to examine machinery highlighting and prosecuting work at height breaches, and inspectors visiting to assess lifting operations enquire into legionella management.

We’ve also seen clients underplay concerns about risks like flour dust - and by misjudging the seriousness that HSE, failing to manage the investigation properly, leading to prosecution where enforcement action could likely have been avoided by a prompt and considered response.
