Further to our previous article, The Maternity Scandal published on 4th December 2019, The Independent has now reported that the number of cases under investigation has increased from around 600 to 1,170.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the review is continuing into the maternity care at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust, where dozens of babies died or suffered brain damage, as well as the deaths of three mothers. Although some members of the investigative team have been called back to the frontline and/or reduced their hours on the inquiry, Donna Ockenden, who leads the investigation has said that the team remained committed to its work and will publish the review as soon as it reasonably can.

Regarding the increase in numbers, Ms Ockenden also added: "Following media attention in the autumn of 2018, a number of families contacted the trust directly and either asked for their cases to be reviewed, or to be included, in the independent maternity review. This group of families have also been written to today, together with a number of families who commenced legal proceedings against the trust."

We will keep our website updated on the progress of the report but if you have concerns about your previous antenatal or maternity care or if you consider it fell below the proper standard, please contact the Clinical Negligence team on 01254 872 111 to discuss the matter further.
