On 24 May 2020, the Prime Minister announced the reopening of secondary schools from 15 June 2020 to year 10 and year 12 pupils and to plan on this basis.

Yesterday evening, the Department for Education (DfE) published updated guidance and outlined expectations for mainstream and alternative provision secondary schools for the return of year 10 and year 12 pupils from 15 June 2020.

The full guidance can be viewed here .

Guidance synopsis

  • A quarter of year 10 and year 12 pupils are allowed at school at any one time in offering face to face support.
  • Schools have the flexibility in providing face to face support to year 10 and year 12 pupils as appropriate to their circumstances.
  • Remote education will remain the predominant form of education delivery for these year groups.
  • Schools should also continue providing full-time provision for vulnerable pupils, critical workers and of all year groups.
  • Schools should refer to existing DfE guidance issued on protective measures on 11 May 2020 (Coronavirus (COVID-19): implementing protective measures in education and childcare settings) and adopt approaches and measures in creating a safer environment.
  • Considerations should also be given on how pupils travel to and from school to minimise risks of Covid-19 transmission.
