Lockdown 2 is well underway and understandably, for some parents, this has caused some confusion. To clear things up, here are 6 need to knows for parents, whether you're a new parent or co-parenting during the pandemic:

  • Babies and toddlers don't count for the outdoor 2 person meet up limit;
  • Children can move between homes if parents are separated;
  • New parent support groups of up to 15 people are allowed to meet in person and children under 5 years old are not counted within the 15 person limit;
  • Outdoor playgrounds are open, but the rules on meeting other households still apply;
  • Parents can form a childcare bubble for "the purposes of informal childcare" which may be an addition to the "support bubble"; and
  • You can take your children to supermarkets or other essential shops with you if they can't stay at home.

Lockdown may be confusing, and each lockdown and area of restriction appears to be different but for the purpose of the next few weeks, perhaps this may be helpful.

Remember, child contact should be carried out in a safe way, there are a number of temporary ways in which contact can still take place without putting anyone at risk. Read our co-parenting during the crisis article here for some advice.

Contact may not continue as normal only if it is necessary for the child to self-isolate if they are showing symptoms. If a child is unable to travel between parents, video calls are a great way to maintain contact during this period of time.

It is important that parents work together to accommodate childcare during this second lockdown with minimal disruption to the children. If you are unable to come to an agreement, a solicitor can assist you in coming to an agreement.

Our experienced Family Solicitors are on hand to assist and provide further advice if required.
