Big Brother Google?

Today Google implements a new privacy policy. The new policy allows Google to cross reference personal data from users' emails, YouTube videos watched and searches made thus building a detailed profile of users.

Laws brought into effect in May 2011 require website operators to ensure they have users "informed consent" for the use of cookies and there are concerns this new policy may not confirm. The French data protection regulator is leading a review of Google's updated policy to ensure that these changes, and the manner of their communication, comply with legal requirements.

Once again, as with AdWords, Google is pushing the envelope of what web technology can do and the law (in this case data protection and trade marks in the case of AdWords) is reacting. AdWords came out on top when the European Court considered its legality. Will it be any different this time?
